SEATTLE
From an e-mail dated March 13, 2020
As I sat down to edit this new work yesterday, the news unavoidably seeping into my studio, I was reminded as visual artists, musicians, writers - our job is to absorb the world around us, digest it, and translate it to you, the audience.
I took this photograph on February 6th in Seattle. I was watching videos on Twitter of Wuhan being sprayed down by men in white uniforms, while procrastinating on writing a proposal, while also photographing the light hitting Lake Washington. Stay off Twitter, do not get distracted by the light on the lake, stay off Twitter, do not get distracted by beautiful light, focus. I spent the day photographing instead of writing.
I had no idea we would soon become the US epicenter of the virus. In retrospect, I wasn't simply procrastinating, but being pulled towards an eerie beauty I didn't yet understand.
I'm writing from Friday Harbor, a small island community about 85 miles north of Seattle, self-isolating with dear friend and mentor, Sarah (immune compromised and over 70). We are doing our best to stay healthy while entertaining each other- meaningful conversations about art and politics, good meals, laughs and long walks.
A real friend lets you turn their dining room into your studio indefinitely.
