MOURNING FLOWERS (THE FLOWERS)
Mourning Flowers is an art project brings awareness to the ripple effects of trauma and fear that communities sustain after acts of violence. It uses the flowers and sleeves that wrap them left as offerings at spontaneous memorials to bridge the disconnect between violence and the human response to it.
18 Bouquets of flowers for each October 25, 2023 shooting victim in Lewiston, Maine. Image size 62x32”, Archival Pigment Print in edition of 20. These are bouquets of flowers I saved from Just-In-Time Recreation and Schemengee’s Bar and Grille the day before we cleared the sites. After I photographed (scanned) the flowers, I dried them and brought them to Maine MILL for display and storage. The piece is a symbol of both collective and individual grief of a traumatized community.
In September 2024, I photographed this small selection of flowers that were left at the 9/11 Memorial to honor the victims of the attacks.
Mourning Flowers is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. Contributions for the charitable purposes of Mourning Flowers must be made payable to “Fractured Atlas” only and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
